Walk to Cure Diabetes

  • Caitlyn Carr is walking with Caitlyn's Crew on October 24, 2010 in Staten Island, NY.

Hi! My name is Caitlyn Carr and I'm nine years old. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes two years ago at the age of seven. As you may be able to tell from my picture, I'm a pretty happy 9 year old girl. What you probably don't know is that hours after this picture as taken I had a seizure that put me in the hospital. My blood sugar went too low and caused me to become hypoglycemic. High and low blood sugar levels can actually be very dangerous and in some cases deadly. I am even more cautious now and test my sugar levels more frequently - usually about 8-10 times a day. I'm on the OmniPod Insulin System which provides me with the insulin that I need to live. It's a pump system that I have to change every other day. I don't let diabetes stop me from doing everything that I love - soccer, basketball and tennis. I just have to be extra careful.

I recently had the trill of meeting Nick Jonas. I try and live my life by thinking of a verse from his song "A little bit longer", which he wrote about his personal struggle with Type 1 diabetes. " A little bit longer and I'll be fine ....... I'll be fine."

This is our third year participating in the Walk for the Cure and I would love if you would join my team and walk with us. Last year we had over 60 people walking with "Caitlyn's Crew" and we all had a great time!! We raised over $10,000!! If you can't walk with us it would be great if you could make a donation - no amount is too small!!

There is some good news, though. JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and its making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure.

Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
